developing sustainable communities

GIVE YOUR STUDENTS A NATIONAL VOICE

‘Developing Sustainable Communities’ is a national competition for Years 9, 10, 11 and 12 to engage young people in planning the future.

Winning schools will receive sports equipment to the retail value of £1,000 as well as gaining national recognition, while winning students will each receive an iPod Touch and have the opportunity to become Sustainable Community Ambassadors who will meet with ministers and officials from the Department for Communities and Local Government (CLG) to discuss their ideas.

This website provides advice and support materials to guide your students in completing their competition entries to design a sustainable community.

Participating in the competition will reinforce citizenship, design, environmental science and enterprise capabilities. The learnings are directly relevant to GCSE Science, Geography and Citizenship. At A Level they reinforce Geography, Environmental Science, Politics, General Studies and Business Studies.

“The Developing Sustainable Communities competition will give young people a chance to learn more about the important issues surrounding sustainable development. We need enterprising approaches to sustainable development and this competition encourages young people to be innovative in searching for solutions to the challenges of the future.” Jim Knight MP, the former Minister for Schools and Learners.
